Travel & Leisure Magazine recently updated their list of America’s Best Ski Towns and Breckenridge with over 2,900 skiable acres is ranked #7. But there’s more to Breckenridge than winter snow sports. Visit in October and experience some of our fall favorites before the snow starts to fly.
Take a Hike
Fall is the ideal time to take advantage of the crisp mornings and warm daytime temperatures in the Colorado Rockies to go for a walk in the woods.
Although September is historically the prime leaf peeping month, we think you’ll find October equally as scenic and the popular hiking trails less crowded. For a list of the roads less travelled, check out GoBreck’s Trails Off the Beaten Path. If you’re interested in a guided hiking trip with an educational twist visit Breckenridge Heritage Alliance to hike through Gold Mine history and visit a ghost town.
Learn to Mountain Bike
Breckenridge is home to several hundred miles of national forest trails ideal for mountain biking. No matter your age or skill level you will find trails that match your ability. Smooth dirt roads that run along the Swan River Valley are ideal for beginners or families with young kids in tow. More seasoned mountain bikers can choose from challenging downhill terrain and 100’s of miles of single track.
If you’re new to mountain biking or want to improve your skills consider going with a guide or taking a class.  Colorado Adventure Guides offers a variety of mountain biking lessons and guided rides for all skill levels. They even offer a Woman’s Specific Intro to MTN Biking course to help female riders new to the sport learn skills such as braking, shifting and managing tight turns.
Fly Fishing
The moderate temperatures and stable water conditions make fall a favorite season for fly-fishing in Colorado.
Summit County is home to some of the best fly fishing in the state of Colorado. With multiple rivers, streams and alpine lakes all within an hour of downtown Breckenridge, there’s a fishing hole to match all interests and skill levels. With so many options to choose from, knowing where to go and what the fish will be hungry for can be a bit daunting.
Luckily, the local shops like Breckenridge Outfitters and Mountain Angler can provide you with everything you need for your time on the water, including fishing licenses, rods & reels, waders, boots, water and drinks. They even have seasoned guides ready to share their expertise and a day on the water.
Ready for a autumn visit, but not sure where to stay? We recommend The Hyatt Residence Club–Breckenridge which is conveninently located downtown and within walking distance to shopping and restaurants. You can rent a studio, two or three bedroom condominium home at The Hyatt by contacting our friends at Mountain Vacation Rental.
